Health Ministry to Expand Non-Smoking Zones Under New Regulations

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to expand designated no-smoking zones as part of updated regulations aimed at reducing tobacco use and safeguarding public health. The draft regulation, now completed, will soon be open for public consultation, according to Deputy Minister of Health Ismail Zahir.
During a panel discussion organized by PSM News and the Health Ministry, Zahir stated that once the regulations are gazetted, non-smoking zones across the country will see a significant increase. The updated framework is expected to strengthen the ability of law enforcement agencies to enforce tobacco control laws effectively.
Amendments to the Tobacco Control Act recently banned the import, distribution, sale, and use of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and related products in the Maldives. Zahir highlighted ongoing collaboration with local councils, women’s development committees, and associations to raise awareness about these changes, ensuring the public is informed across all atolls.
“We are also working to familiarize relevant staff of government agencies with these amendments,” Zahir added, underscoring the ministry’s commitment to building awareness.
To further support efforts in reducing tobacco use, the Health Ministry recently launched a 24-hour hotline, 1676, to assist individuals seeking to quit smoking. The hotline provides guidance and support for those battling tobacco addiction.
These measures reflect the ministry’s proactive stance on tobacco control and its commitment to promoting a healthier society through stricter regulations and public education initiatives.
