In an unfortunate turn of events, a fire broke out early this morning in the Housing Ministry building, located at the intersection of Amini Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu. The fire, which began around 7:30 AM in a tin structure at the Housing Ministry, spread to the adjacent Ministry of Construction and Environment Ministry buildings before being successfully brought under control.
Emergency teams from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Velana International Airport (VIA) Firefighters worked tirelessly to stop the fire and ensure the safety of residents in nearby areas. Some buildings in the vicinity were evacuated as a precaution due to the effects of smoke.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to take precautions due to the smoke spreading in the area. They recommend avoiding smoke-affected areas unless absolutely necessary and covering the mouth and nose if entering such areas. Residents are also urged to keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering homes. Additionally, the HPA emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms like shortness of breath, severe coughing, dizziness, or difficulty breathing occur. Special attention should be given to individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, as they are more vulnerable to the effects of smoke.
Authorities have assured the public that the fire is now under control
