Performing the five obligatory prayers on time is essential for blessings in one’s actions and efforts, emphasized today’s Friday sermon titled, “Busyness is Not an Excuse to Pray.”
The sermon reiterated that prayer, a fundamental pillar of Islam, is an obligatory act of worship for every Mukallaf whether they are at home, traveling, or even unwell. It clarified that the only valid exemption is when one’s intellect is compromised. The sermon reminded the congregation that the first question on the Day of Resurrection will be about prayer, underscoring its significance in a Muslim's life.
“Prayer is a noble act of worship, not something to delay until all worldly tasks are complete,” the sermon stated.
The sermon also addressed the Maldivian work culture, noting that many citizens are engaged in fishing, agriculture, office work, and shopkeeping. It urged workers to prioritize prayer despite their busy schedules. Parents, for instance, must balance work, family duties, and prayers during their limited lunch breaks. Organizing one’s time around prayers ensures none of these essential duties are neglected.
Quoting Surah Ṭā-Hā (20:132), the sermon emphasized Allah’s promise of sustenance and the importance of steadfastness in prayer:
"Order your people to pray, and pray steadfastly yourself. We are not asking you to give Us provision; We provide for you, and the rewards of the Hereafter belong to the devout."
The sermon also acknowledged the challenges faced by those whose jobs make it difficult to attend congregational prayers. It advised such individuals to pray wherever they are, emphasizing that inability to join the mosque congregation is not an excuse to abandon prayer altogether.
The sermon highlighted the benefits of performing prayers on time, including Protection from immoral and forbidden acts.Respect for time and structure in daily life. Strengthened obedience to Allah’s commands. And Increased humility and fear of Allah.
Muslims alltogether were reminded that prayer brings blessings, organizes one’s life, and connects them to Allah regardless of life’s busyness.
