Maldives Joins Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Health and Environment

The Maldives has officially been accepted as a member of the Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Health and Environment (APRFHE), a decision announced by the Council of Ministers during the Cabinet meeting held on December 1, 2024. The Ministry of Health proposed the move, marking a significant step for the country in strengthening its international health and environmental collaborations.
As a member, the Maldives will benefit from enhanced regional cooperation, supporting the development and implementation of health and environmental policies and national plans. The forum offers a platform for advocacy to mitigate the adverse effects of environmental degradation and climate change on public health. It also facilitates the adoption of digital health solutions, ensuring better access to health and environmental services across the region.
The forum, which was established in 2004, aims to address health risks stemming from environmental changes and fosters voluntary participation from countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Through its knowledge network, members can collaborate on research, measure the impact of environmental pollution on public health, and receive technical assistance.
Maldives’ participation also opens opportunities for regional collaboration through thematic working groups and the possibility of taking on a leadership role as the forum’s chair. The forum supports global efforts like the Paris Agreement, the Minamata Convention, and the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on policies that protect public health while promoting environmental sustainability.
Importantly, joining APRFHE does not impose any legal obligations on the Maldives or its citizens but offers strategic opportunities for national advancement in both health and environmental sectors.
