Maldivian Parliament has extended its final session of 2024 until December 15, pushing back the originally scheduled recess date of November 30. The decision, passed with 68 votes in favor, highlights the Parliament's commitment to progressing essential legislative initiatives before the year's end.
Among the key priorities is the amendment of the Drug Acts and the introduction of a new anti-gang crime bill, both of which were emphasized by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier this week. The Drug Acts amendments are expected to be presented shortly, with the anti-gang crime bill to follow in the coming weeks. These initiatives are designed to enhance law enforcement capabilities and improve public safety, addressing some of the nation’s most pressing concerns.
In a major step for the nation's fiscal strategy, Parliament also approved the MVR 56.6 billion state budget for 2025. The approval sets the stage for continued economic growth and infrastructure development, reflecting the government's forward-looking economic vision for the upcoming year.
In addition to the budget, Parliament passed four significant pieces of legislation:
Amendment to the Sports Act, aimed at boosting sports development,
Urban Development Bill, to encourage sustainable growth in urban areas,
State Debt Bill, to enhance national debt management practices,
Fiscal Responsibility Bill, to ensure responsible financial governance.
The extension of Parliament’s session underscores the government’s dedication to advancing key reforms and ensuring a productive conclusion to 2024. With critical bills still in progress, the extended session is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s governance framework and supporting economic stability into 2025.
