Maldives Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has revealed ambitious plans to expand the country’s fish processing capacity by nine times within the next three years, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise the fisheries sector.
Speaking at a PSM News program, Minister Shiyam detailed plans to increase the current processing capacity from 35 tonnes to 300 tonnes, aiming to strengthen the economic backbone of Maldivian fisheries. He emphasized that the government is actively working to address challenges faced by fishermen, including improving access to ice and modern facilities for fish storage and transport.
“Work has already begun on 11 ice plants to support fishermen. Three of these will be operational this year, five more will be financed through Saudi funding, and three are included in the government’s upcoming budget,” Shiyam said.
Additionally, the government has introduced a special loan facility to install saltwater fish cooling systems on fishing boats, ensuring better preservation of catches. Over 35 beneficiaries are expected to receive loans under this program in 2024.
The initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to empowering fishermen with the tools and infrastructure necessary to thrive, ensuring sustainable growth in the fisheries sector while addressing the pressing issues of accessibility and resource availability.
