STELCO Launches Wave Monitoring Project to Advance Maldives’ Renewable Energy Goals

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has initiated a pioneering Wave Monitoring Project to explore the potential of ocean wave energy as a renewable power source in the Maldives. This project, a critical part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's goal to achieve 33% renewable energy consumption within five years, will collect vital data on harnessing wave energy, offering a promising complement to the country’s existing solar energy systems.
STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmee, shared on social media that this wave monitoring initiative is a significant milestone in diversifying the Maldives’ renewable energy sources. Fahmee highlighted that wave energy, unlike solar power, provides a consistent energy supply unaffected by weather variations, which could enhance the resilience of the nation’s energy grid.
"The Wave Monitoring Project marks a substantial step toward President Muizzu’s vision for sustainable energy, opening up new possibilities for the Maldives' renewable energy landscape," said Fahmee.
The Maldives government has also introduced the Energy Policy and Strategy 2024–2029, guiding efforts toward its ambitious green energy targets. Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), renewable energy systems are set to expand across 160 additional islands, furthering the Maldives’ sustainable development goals.
