Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced plans to amend legislation to grant the government authority to seize properties linked to gang and drug-related activities. Addressing the media, Minister Ihusaan highlighted the rise in gang-related crimes and drug offenses since the new administration took office, reaffirming President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to tackling these issues decisively.
Minister Ihusaan emphasized that legislative reforms are essential to curb these challenges. He acknowledged the recent progress made by the Maldives Police Service (MPS), particularly through the work of a specialized unit dedicated to investigating gang-related offenses, but noted that legal gaps still hinder enforcement.
One of the main obstacles, according to the minister, is the challenge of proving offenses under current laws, often allowing repeat offenders to re-enter society. To address these gaps, Minister Ihusaan pledged to introduce the toughest penalties for violations under the newly amended laws.
Ensuring public safety is the administration's top priority, he stressed, adding that these amendments are essential to reducing gang crime and reinforcing community security.
