President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the new fuel farm and launched the services of the fuel hydrant system at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a significant step in enhancing the airport’s fueling efficiency, safety, and sustainability to meet increasing demand, particularly for long-haul flights.
The upgraded fuel farm, now spanning 37,000 square meters, triples the previous capacity, with space for future expansion through two additional Jet A-1 storage tanks. Built to international standards, this new infrastructure strengthens VIA’s readiness for a dynamic future in global aviation.
At the inauguration, MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed explained that the previous fuel facility could store 13 million liters of jet fuel, while the new one has a 45 million-liter capacity, along with additional storage for one million liters of diesel and 100,000 liters of petrol. The newly developed 8.4-km hydrant network will also enhance operational efficiency by refueling up to seven aircraft simultaneously, reducing time and operational costs for airlines.
Shareef added that the development not only cuts costs but positions VIA to attract more international carriers, expanding Maldives’ reach as a major destination.
