In a groundbreaking initiative, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced new measures to promote the country as a prime location for film tourism. This effort, led by MMPRC's Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, is aimed at expanding the Maldives’ tourism appeal by tapping into non-traditional avenues and enhancing its reputation on the global stage.
Speaking at the launch ceremony for Guraidhoo Island's tourism brand, Shiuree stressed MMPRC's dedication to drawing tourists during off-peak seasons by diversifying the tourism sector. “In addition to traditional tourism, we are committed to exploring innovative ways to boost visitor numbers,” he remarked. "Film tourism provides a unique opportunity to showcase the Maldives’ breathtaking scenery, and hosting annual sports and recreational events can make the Maldives a year-round destination."
Shiuree also outlined plans for initiatives that would support the Maldives' growing film industry, including efforts to attract foreign filmmakers. He further acknowledged the development of tourism infrastructure on Guraidhoo Island, which currently boasts 23 guesthouses. Shiuree highlighted MMPRC’s collaboration with local guesthouse owners to build on the island’s tourism potential, reinforcing a commitment to local partnerships and economic growth.
This strategic move aligns with national efforts to establish the Maldives as a hub for film productions. In an earlier statement, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed had pointed to plans to produce a Hollywood film in the Maldives, signaling the government’s dedication to expanding the nation’s appeal as a filming destination.
With these initiatives, the Maldives is poised to offer more than just luxury vacations, embracing a model that invites global filmmakers and seasonal events, making it an attractive location for both tourists and industry professionals.
