President Muizzu to Lay Off 228 Political Workers in Major Cost-Cutting Reform

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to lay off 228 political employees from various government ministries as part of his administration’s drive to reduce state expenditure. The decision is aimed at streamlining government operations and implementing cost-saving measures within the framework of the government's reform agenda.
In a post on X, President Muizzu highlighted that the layoffs, to be executed within the next 15 days, will include 7 Ministers of State, 43 Deputy Ministers, 109 Senior Political Directors, and 69 Political Directors. The move is projected to save the state an estimated MVR 5.7 million per month, which equates to a total annual saving of MVR 68.6 million.
This decision comes in light of the administration’s commitment to cutting unnecessary expenses and ensuring more efficient use of public funds. With the government aiming to prioritize essential services while managing fiscal responsibilities, these layoffs mark the beginning of broader reforms within the public sector.
President Muizzu’s decision has sparked interest, given the potential impact on government operations and the political landscape, as his administration looks to reshape the way public offices are staffed and managed. Further details regarding how these changes will affect specific ministries and departments are yet to be disclosed, though the President emphasized the importance of making government spending more sustainable.
