President His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed returned to the Maldives this afternoon after a historic five-day state visit to India, held from October 6 to 10, 2024. This visit marks President Muizzu’s first official trip abroad since assuming office in November 2023, following an invitation from the President of India, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu.
During the landmark visit, President Muizzu engaged in high-level discussions with Indian leadership, including President Murmu and Prime Minister His Excellency Narendra Modi, along with several senior government officials. Talks focused on further strengthening the friendly relations and the development partnership between the two nations.
One of the key outcomes of the visit was the adoption of "A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership," a guiding framework to enhance cooperation across various sectors. Several agreements were also exchanged, and virtual inaugurations were held as part of the deepening bilateral relationship.
During discussions with Prime Minister Modi, both leaders explored new avenues of cooperation and reviewed ongoing initiatives, focusing on key areas such as social housing, infrastructure, agriculture, trade and investment, human resource development, healthcare, women’s empowerment, renewable energy, and maritime and security cooperation. President Muizzu expressed deep gratitude for India’s financial support, particularly the recent rollover of T-bills in May and September for an additional year at zero interest. He also welcomed the INR 30 billion support under a bilateral currency swap agreement, further strengthening Maldives’ economic resilience.
In addition to formal talks, President Muizzu attended business forums in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, where he highlighted the Maldives’ vast potential in tourism and outlined the country’s vision for economic diversification. He showcased opportunities in special economic zones, luxury private islands, eco-friendly resorts, and integrated tourism projects. In Mumbai, the President and First Lady attended the Maldives-India Tourism Networking Evening, fostering tourism investments and collaborations.
The President’s visit also had a cultural element, with the President and First Lady touring the historic Taj Mahal in Agra. The First Lady, meanwhile, visited the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and her alma mater, St. Joseph’s University in Bangalore.
Throughout the visit, President Muizzu met with Maldivian communities in New Delhi and Bangalore, listening to their concerns and reaffirming his administration's commitment to supporting Maldivians living abroad.
As the Maldives and India approach the 60th anniversary of establishing formal diplomatic ties in 2025, President Muizzu extended invitations to both President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi for state visits to the Maldives.
