President Dr Mohamed Muizzu Returns from Landmark Visit to the United States for UNGA 79

Male’, Maldives – 29th September 2024: President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu returned to the Maldives early this morning, marking the conclusion of his landmark visit to the United States, where he attended the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The trip, which began on 20th September, saw the President take part in a series of historic engagements, including delivering a powerful statement during the General Debate of UNGA 79, which brought together world leaders for high-level discussions on global issues. President Dr Muizzu made history as the first Maldivian Head of State to address the UN Security Council since the Maldives joined the United Nations 59 years ago. This historic moment underscored the Maldives’ growing influence and active participation on the global stage.
During the course of the trip, President Muizzu played a pivotal role in co-chairing numerous significant side events at the UN, highlighting his leadership on key international issues. In addition to his speeches, he engaged in bilateral discussions with various international leaders and representatives, further strengthening diplomatic ties and cooperation with countries from across the globe.
President Muizzu also made time to connect with the Maldivian community residing in New York, reinforcing his commitment to engaging with citizens abroad. His visit also extended beyond the United Nations, as he delivered a well-received speech at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs, where he shared insights on governance, international relations, and the Maldives’ role in global peace and security. Furthermore, the President visited Google’s headquarters in New York, exploring potential areas of collaboration in the fields of technology and innovation.
This visit marked Dr Muizzu’s first participation in the UN General Assembly as the President of the Maldives, and its timing was particularly symbolic, as it coincided with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives' UN membership. The President was accompanied by a high-level government delegation, reflecting the importance of the visit for the Maldives’ foreign policy agenda and global presence.
