Two Indian Nationals Arrested for Extensive Alcohol Smuggling Operation in Maldives

Two Indian nationals have been arrested in the Maldives for allegedly running a large-scale smuggling operation involving liquor. The suspects, aged 42 and 43, were detained by police and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days following a court order. Their detention is set to end on September 24 unless extended further.
The court determined that sufficient evidence had been presented to establish the suspects' involvement in the illegal activity. Both men admitted to smuggling and selling the alcohol, although they claimed their employer was unaware of their actions.
Authorities have indicated that one of the suspects was working illegally in the country, and police believe additional individuals may be involved in the operation. The investigation is ongoing, with police closely examining the wider network that may be linked to the smuggling scheme.
The court, invoking Articles 49 of the Constitution and Sections 59 and 60 of the Criminal Procedure Code, ruled to keep the suspects in custody to ensure the safety and security of the community.
