Fenaka Initiates Procurement of Generators for 45 Islands Amidst Power Supply Enhancements

Fenaka Corporation, the state-owned utility provider, is in the process of acquiring vital generators and critical spare parts for 45 islands as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability of power supply across the Maldives. This announcement was made by the company’s Managing Director, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, during a recent broadcast on Public Service Media (PSM).
According to Muaz, Fenaka is prioritizing the procurement of approximately 45 generators and the necessary spares for their maintenance, with a targeted completion before the upcoming Ramadan. This initiative follows the recent distribution of 47 generators to the most severely affected islands, underscoring the company’s commitment to addressing power supply challenges in the nation’s rural areas.
Muaz highlighted that the current difficulties faced by many islands are largely due to the deteriorating condition of existing power plants, which have suffered from years of inadequate maintenance. In response, Fenaka has developed a comprehensive plan to not only acquire new generators but also to undertake critical projects aimed at upgrading the energy infrastructure on some of the worst-affected islands.
The managing director further disclosed that work is set to commence shortly on these projects, with 15 of the most severely impacted islands, including Thulhaadhoo and Hinnavaru, being prioritized for immediate upgrades. The enhancements are expected to significantly improve power supply reliability in these areas, ensuring that residents have uninterrupted access to electricity, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
Fenaka, which provides power to more than 150 islands across the Maldives, has been under increasing pressure to modernize its aging infrastructure and meet the growing energy demands of the country. The procurement of new generators and the planned network upgrades represent a critical step in Fenaka’s broader strategy to enhance the resilience of the nation’s power grid, particularly in its remote and rural regions.
As the company moves forward with these initiatives, it remains focused on ensuring that all necessary preparations are in place to support the reliable delivery of electricity to communities across the Maldives, particularly during peak demand periods such as Ramadan.
