President Muizzu Vows to Investigate MMPRC Corruption and Recover Public Funds

In a meeting organized by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) last night, President Mohamed Muizzu declared his administration's commitment to thoroughly investigate the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption case and recover the lost public funds.
President Muizzu emphasized his intention to address the corruption that led to significant financial losses for the public. "We will look into the scams committed with public money through corrupt practices and recover the money lost," he stated. Highlighting the inefficiency of previous governments, Muizzu noted, "Every government has set up a presidential commission and spent millions, but none of the lost money has been recovered so far."
To tackle this issue, President Muizzu announced that his administration has initiated the drafting of a bill to enact a special law for asset recovery from those who profited from selling public properties at undervalued prices. "We will also recover the money stashed abroad," he asserted.
The proposed bill will incorporate recommendations from international standards and best practices for the successful recovery of such funds. "The bill will be prepared by obtaining recommendations from abroad, adhering to international standards and recommendations for the successful recovery of such funds," Muizzu explained.
Addressing the broader issue of corruption, President Muizzu declared that systemic changes would be implemented to prevent corruption from being a persistent issue in the government. He emphasized that the recovery of funds lost in the MMPRC scandal is a priority. "When it comes to public funds, the biggest issue is the missing money from MMPRC," he said, adding that recovering these funds and holding those involved accountable will be a top priority.
This announcement comes as a significant move by President Muizzu, reflecting his administration's dedication to enhancing transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in the Maldives. The MMPRC scandal, which involves the embezzlement of millions of dollars intended for tourism promotion, has been a major issue in Maldivian politics, leading to widespread public outcry and demands for justice.
With these new measures, the government aims to restore public trust and ensure that those responsible for corrupt practices are brought to justice.
