President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu has confirmed that the new terminal and associated infrastructure at Velana International Airport (VIA) are set to be completed by the middle of next year. He made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the PNC headquarters, PNC House, yesterday.
Addressing the event, President Muizzu highlighted the rapid progress of the airport's construction, which had previously been slow. He noted that some of the new terminal’s aero bridges would be operational by the end of this year.
“The airport was being built at a slow pace, we all know that, but now the work is going on at a very fast pace. There are eight aero bridges and at least three aero bridges will be brought later this year,” the President stated.
He emphasized that the completion of the new terminal is now projected for mid-2025, with all related works targeted to be finished by July of next year. “We had previously targeted to complete the work by the end of this year, but now the goal is set for the middle of next year, by July,” he said.
President Muizzu underscored the economic significance of the new terminal, describing it as a major gateway that will bring numerous economic benefits to the Maldives. The new terminal is expected to enhance the airport's capacity and improve the overall travel experience, further boosting the country's tourism industry and economic growth.
