Maldives will soon see the withdrawal of Indian troops in accordance with the dates agreed with India, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said yesterday.
President Dr. Muizzu said this while addressing a meeting with the people of Baarashu during his current visit to the four northernmost atolls.
One of the things the people entrusted him with was to dispel the foreign troops in Maldives, and he started the work towards this on his first day in office. Since then, great achievements have been made towards this goal, he said.
The Letter of Exchange between the Government of India and the Government of Maldives has already been signed, with an agreement on dates, and the withdrawal of Indian troops will be completed very soon, he said.
Talks are underway to withdraw Indian troops from Maldives on diplomatic grounds. As agreed in the latest talks, the military personnel stationed at 1 of the 3 aviation platforms in Maldives will be withdrawn before the 10th of March. The remaining 2 platforms will be cleared of Indian military personnel by the 10th of May.
The Indian government has agreed to keep its troops out of Maldives. In addition, the government will not renew the agreement with India that affords them extensive permission to draw charts of Maldives’ seabed.
