The opposition MDP has issued a statement blaming the government for the street attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem early this morning.
In the statement, the MDP said the attack was carried out because the government protects criminal groups. Since the presidential election, the MDP has been linking President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu to criminal groups.
The MDP leaders have accused the President of having gangs spend on his campaign during the presidential election.
MDP has said it believes that the government is protecting criminal groups because of its close ties with government officials. However, the MDP has not provided evidence of any link between a criminal group and the government or any evidence that the government has given such a person protection.
Although the MDP has made serious allegations against the government in this regard, a number of criminals who have been charged and convicted by the state and sentenced to long prison terms have had their sentences commuted or been pardoned by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and released back into society.
They include murderers, convicted felons, drug lords and sexual offenders, according to statistics.
The MDP issued a statement calling for an investigation into the attack and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. They also called for the provision of security to state officials.
Meanwhile, the interim president of the MDP, President Ibrahim Solih, described the attack in a post on X as being politically motivated, condemning the attack and calling for an immediate investigation to those behind it to justice. He did not say how he knew the motive behind the attack.
Shameem was attacked this morning in Henveiru and the police service said they were investigating the matter.
It is worth noting that when the MDP is an opposition party, it blames the ruling party for all the unrest and fighting in the country. The party blamed the murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed and disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rizwan on the then President Abdullah Yameen.
