Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said in a post on X today that the rules on determining the number of road vehicles to be registered and the period of use of vehicles are being amended in an effort to tackle congestion.
The Minister said the aim is to provide an appropriate solution to the challenge faced by city and island councils in determining the number of vehicles that can be driven in each island.
“To provide an appropriate solution to the challenge faced by city and island councils in determining the number of vehicles allowed to be in use, the draft Regulation No. 170-2021 will be amended and made public within the next two months,” the Minister said.
Recently, the Minister said that the traffic problem in Malé city has worsened because a large number of vehicles have been registered in the city without much consideration. In the last five years, 69,080 vehicles have been registered in Maldives, of which more than 42,000 have been registered in Malé.
