Government to Increase Employment Opportunities for People with Special Needs

President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu's promise to provide employment opportunities to people with special needs has been formulated into a policy and posted on the Government Gazette. The regulation, which was announced yesterday, is designed to facilitate the right of people with special needs to work and equal opportunities in the workplace like everyone else
The regulation is empowered under the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Financial Assistance Act to prescribe rules to ensure this right.
The purpose of the "Regulation on Employment and Employment of Persons with Disabilities" is to achieve the following:
  • To provide people with special needs with equal opportunities in employment, which includes providing provisions to take into account their preference for the type of work to engage in.
  • To prohibit discrimination against persons with special needs in employment and in the workplace on the basis of their characteristics.
  • To ensure employers of people with special needs provide an appropriate working environment for the person and establish rules for the inclusion of these persons in the workplace.
According to this rule, before the employer arranges employment, the place must be made ready for the individuals with special needs attend the workplace. The facility must be able to provide reasonable accommodations for these individuals and its staff must be trained to work with people with special needs. The employer must develop and publish this standard within three months of the rule coming into force. These rules shall come into force one month after the date of publication in the Government of Maldives Gazette.
