Government will Ensure Timely Payments to Fishermen: Minister

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has said that a permanent system will be established soon to ensure that fishermen are paid on time for the fish they catch.
Speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate a rescue diving training program for crew members of fishing vessels in G.Dh. Madaveli yesterday, he said he was aware that the issue of recurring delays of payment for the fish caught by the fishermen was a growing issue of concern among the fishermen.
According to him, the difficulties faced in paying the fishermen were caused by the weak financial situation of the state when the new government took over. However, work is underway to resolve the issues, he said.
The Minister stated that he is confident that the President will pay the fishermen soon, through the new system that is to be put place.
He further said that the diver training program, which started yesterday, is one of the efforts being made by the President to solve the problems faced by the fishermen.
The Minister said the project aims to make Maldives’ fisheries a safe industry and to reduce accidents in the fisheries industry.
He said the President’s aim with this new project is to ensure that every fishing vessel in the country has a trained rescue diving crew member shows his passion for the industry.
