MALE' CITY, MALDIVES - Male' City Mayor Dr. Muizzu has officially entered the race for the presidency in the upcoming Maldives election, submitting his candidacy papers to the Elections Commission of Maldives.
Dr. Muizzu, who represents People's National Congress, the sister party of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), was accepted by the commission as a legitimate candidate. He has selected MP Hussein Mohammed Latheef, the parliament member for Faresmaathodaa constituency, as his running mate.
Having served as the housing minister in two different administrations, Dr. Muizzu is a familiar name in Maldivian politics. He held the post first in Dr. Waheed's administration from 8th February 2012 to 17th November 2013 and then again in President Yameen's administration from 17th November 2013 to 17th November 2018.
His tenure as housing minister marked significant milestones in the country's infrastructure development. Notable achievements include the construction of the Male-Hulhumale bridge, 7,000 housing units in Hulhumale, and the realization of various other large-scale projects.
Dr. Muizzu will be competing against seven other candidates, including the incumbent president, Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, and other candidates representing minor parties.
The upcoming election promises to be a hotly contested battle, and Dr. Muizzu's entrance into the race has further added to the intrigue. His experience in housing and infrastructure development could be a focal point of his campaign, as the nation continues to grow and evolve.
