New Political Party "The Democrats" Formed by Fikuregge Dhirun Movement in Maldives

MALE, MALDIVES - In a significant development in Maldivian politics, a new political party called "The Democrats" has been formed by the Fikuregge Dhirun ("Revival of Thought" in Dhivehi) movement, led by President of the Parliament, President Mohammed Nasheed.
The Democrats officially submitted their application to the Election Commission today under the name of former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman MP Hassan Lateef, who represents Henveiru-West constituency.
Twelve Members of Parliament and MDP Vice-President Mohammed Shifaz also announced their departure from the MDP. These individuals, who are part of the Fikuregge Dhirun movement, revealed their intention to propose the formation of a new party last week.
The Fikuregge Dhirun movement emphasizes the revival of an ideology and aims to present a party that aligns with this renewed vision in the upcoming presidential election. The formation of the Democrats represents a tangible outcome of the movement's efforts to bring about a political transformation based on their core values and beliefs.
Notably, President Nasheed, the driving force behind the Fikuregge Dhirun movement, has not left the MDP and remains as its president.
