President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on Friday at the Office of the Federal President in Berlin. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between the Maldives and Germany.
During the meeting, President Solih praised Germany's leadership in the European Union and explored avenues for support for the Maldives in negotiating tariff rates for Maldivian fish exports and easing visa facilitations for Maldivian travelers.
The discussions between the two leaders focused on strengthening Maldives-Germany relations and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They expressed interest in expanding collaboration in climate change, renewable energy opportunities, aviation, and transport.
President Solih and President Steinmeier reiterated their commitment to continuing to work together in areas of mutual interest for the common good of the people of both countries. The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Germany on July 5, 1966.
It is worth noting that the President of Germany is largely a ceremonial role, with executive power resting with the Chancellor. However, the President does play an important role in promoting the country's values and interests abroad and in representing Germany in international events.
