Maldives Member of Parliament (MP) Ali Riza, of Guraidhoo constituency, passed away last night while undergoing treatment for cancer in Malaysia. Riza, a founding member of the People's Progressive Party (PPM), was a lawyer by profession and had represented former President Yameen and the PPM in various court cases.
Riza, who had been a parliamentarian since 2009, was known to be close to former President Yameen. His death has come as a shock to his colleagues in the PPM and the wider opposition. The PPM has cancelled some of the events planned by the party for the weekend.
Riza's funeral will be held on 24th February at Surau Perdana, No.13, Jalan PJU 8/6, Damansara Perdana, 47820 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The funeral will be attended by leaders of various opposition parties, including the Leader of the People's National Congress, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, MP Ahmed Thoriq of the PPM, President of Guraidhoo Council Yameen, and Zahid Rameez, a Senator of the PPM.
