The Maldives Journal (TMJ) has recently uncovered disturbing information regarding the methods used by some senior government officials to raise funds for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's campaign.
According to several prominent businessmen, they have been contacted by senior officials from the President's office and ministers of state, who have demanded large sums of money, claiming it is for the President's campaign.
One businessman, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "I was contacted by a senior official from the President's office and asked for a large sum of money, with the claim that it was being raised for President Ibrahim's campaign." Another businessman also claimed that a minister of state in the government had contacted him for the same purpose.
TMJ has learned that several high-level government officials have attempted to contact several well-known businesses in the country to raise funds in this manner. One businessman stated that they had brought the issue to the attention of the President's campaign team, and expressed surprise at such a method of fundraising.
"We are not politicians. But as much as we can, we help everyone with money. It seems completely new to make such calls," said one businessman.
The President's campaign manager and MP from Kinbidhoo constituency, Mohamed Nashiz, did not respond to a text message from TMJ seeking comment on the allegations. These reports raise concerns about the ethics and legality of such fundraising methods and calls for transparency from the President's campaign team.
