Elderly Woman Arrested at Maldives Protest Sparking Outrage and Calls for Police Accountability

Last night, Maldives Police arrested a 70-year-old woman at a protest in the capital city of Male’. The woman was participating in a demonstration calling for the release of President Yameen, who was recently sentenced to 11 years in jail. Video of the arrest, which shows police in riot gear manhandling the elderly woman, has gone viral on social media.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many criticizing the police for their excessive use of force. Former Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Dr. Shaheed, tweeted about the incident, stating that "the aggressive conduct of Maldives Police in detaining an elderly person exercising her legitimate rights is not acceptable. Those making this & other arrests in a similar manner must be held accountable."
The opposition has been protesting every night since President Yameen's sentencing, and police have consistently disrupted the demonstrations and arrested numerous individuals.
However, President Solih has claimed that he has given the protesters the freedom to demonstrate. The situation in the Maldives remains tense, with ongoing protests and clashes with the police.
