Maldives Police Service has arrested Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Muizzu, while he was participating in a protest calling for the release of former President Abdullah Yameen.
Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in jail on December 25th, and supporters have been staging peaceful protests every night since then. The opposition has vowed to continue protesting until President Yameen is freed.
Last Friday, protests were held across the nation calling for his freedom. Despite the government's claims that there is room for freedom of assembly in the Maldives, it is clear that any form of protest is not tolerated, as demonstrated by the arrests of those participating in these peaceful demonstrations, including Mayor Muizzu.
