Will reduce taxes if I am back in power: Nasheed

Speaker of the parliament and ruling MDP's president, President Mohammed Nasheed has vowed to reduce taxes if he is back in power.
Nasheed who is contesting in ruling MDP's presidential primary elections, speaking at his inaugural campaign event stated that the government has not dealt with the increasing national debt. He said that the government borrowed to pay debt and now that the people are suffering due to the increased borrowing.
He further stated that the government increased taxes to ease the burden of debt and that it was unacceptable.
"There are two things to assure the people of the country. In the next MDP government, taxes will be reduced. Commodity price inflation is likely to come down. You will be able to heal, relieve your plight," he said.

President Solih recently ratified a bill to increase goods and services tax. Starting from 1st January 2023, GST will be 8 percent and the central bank of the Maldives has predicted that it will cause inflation.
