Maldives National Party (MNP) has decided not to hold a primary and award the party's presidential ticket to party's interim president Colonel (Rtd.) Mohammed Nazim.
The deadline for filing nominations for the 2023 presidential primaries, was at 1430 hours today. Nazim was the only candidate who filed an application by the deadline.
Party spokesman Shidhatha Shareef told some media outlets that Nazim was the only candidate to file his nomination for the primary when the deadline expired. As per party rules, if only one person files his nomination to contest in the primaries, he or she will be assured of the party ticket without a vote.
The MNP, led by Nazim, who is currently an MP from Dhangethi constituency, and his close aide, Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz and Villimale' MP Ahmed Usham, was formed with the intention of opening up opportunities for many new political leaders.
While Nazim has been given the MNP's presidential ticket, PPM the main opposition party has given the party's presidential ticket to former president Abdulla Yameen.
