Nasheed’s request to represent Maldives at COP 27 was denied

The government denied former President and Speaker of Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed’s requests to represent the Maldives at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27), hosted by the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
A close acquaintance of the former president told TMJ that President Nasheed tried to be part of the Maldivian delegation at COP 27, till the last minute. However, he said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration denied his request, which caused him to go to COP 27 as part of the Srilankan delegation. He said that one had to be part of a country delegation to be part of important discussions of the summit.
The Maldivian delegation, led by the Vice President Faisal Naseem, includes the Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Ahmed Saeed.
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesingh had appointed President Nasheed as his honorary International Climate Advisor. However, his attendance at the COP27 was not financed by Sri Lanka.
President Nasheed’s travels had been funded by the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF)’s Environmental Foundation, an institution founded by President Nasheed.
