State collects MVR 124 million more in fines than estimated

The state has collected over MVR 186 million this year in fines.
According to the financial statistics report released by the Ministry of Finance, between January 1, 2022 and September 27, 2022, the state had collected MVR 186.9 million in fines, where they collected MVR 157.9 million within the same period last year.
The state had estimated this amount to be in the range of MVR 62.4 million by the end of the year, however, the collected penalty fees are MVR 124. 5 million in excess of the estimate. This is MVR 29 million more than last year’s collection.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih came into office promising to mitigate income through fines and penalties. He had also vowed not to issue parking tickets without first establishing adequate space for parking in the form of parking zones.
Although the fine beholden to the common citizens have increased from year to year, the government has dismissed penalty charges from resorts and other establishments owned by the wealthy.
