Member of Parliament for the Mahibadhoo constituency, Ahmed Thariq (Tom) has called for amendment to the article stating the requirements for parliament members in the constitution.
Speaking for the changes proposed by Maamigili constituency MP, Qasim Ibrahim, to amend the article that requires for the number of MPs to be increased with increase in population, Thariq said that amendment of the article was necessary.
Thariq said that it was essential for an individual running for parliament to have some educational requirements. He said that the amendment will be approved to include such a requirement should the public get to cast a vote on it.
Moreover, Thariq said that it was worrisome to not have any educational qualifications or work experience requirements to run for parliament, Additionally, he also highlighted the importance of disallowing privileged individuals, favored by foreign countries, to run for parliament.
Furthermore, Thariq said that only people from the constituency must be allowed to run for their representative seat and made an example of Dhangethi constituency MP Mohamed Nazim (Colonel) who left his elected party to form his own party, which upset the people of the constituency.
Thariq said that outsiders, once elected, disregard the expectations of the people they represent.
