A case, suspected to be of monkeypox, has been reported in the Maldives.
TMJ understand the case was reported in privately-owned Tree Top Hospital. A staff at the hospital has confirmed this.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) has not issued a comment. However, Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has confirmed a case has been sighted, but it was not certain whether it was monkeypox. Test results are yet pending.
HPA had previously said that there was a chance of monkeypox spreading in the country.
World Health Organization (WHO) had declared monkeypox outbreak as a global public health hazard. HPA’s statement on this came this Sunday, with the agency urging for preventative measures.
The statement added that based on the global spread of the disease, there was a chance that monkeypox could be detected here as well. However, the agency said the spread of monkeypox would different to that of other infectious diseases.
Initial symptoms typically include a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery, chickenpox-like rash or lesions - often on the mouth or genitals in the recent cases. Infections are usually mild. HPA has urged individuals to seek medical attention if any of the symptoms are observed.
Monkeypox can be spread when someone is in close contact with an infected person. The virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth.
It has not previously been described as a sexually transmitted infection, but it can be passed on by close contact. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said "a notable proportion" of the recent cases in the UK and Europe have been found in gay and bisexual men.
