Criminal Court of the Maldives has revealed that there are 112 cases concerning sexual abuse of minors still pending in the court.
The details were part of disclosure requested by Dhiyares. Dhiyares had petitioned the Court for details of cases involving sexual abuse of minors from 2018 to May 2022.
The disclosure shows that in 2018, 20 cases involving sexual abuse of minors was filed with the Court. The Court was able to deliver a verdict on 11 cases. This included the carried over cases from the previous year.
Thirty-five cases were submitted to the Court in 2019, with Court delivering a verdict on 27 cases.
The next year, 2020, proved to be a monumental year in child sex abuse cases. In 2020, 64 cases involving sexual abuse of minors was submitted. Twenty-two cases reached a judgement.
The next year showed a marked drop in both cases submitted and resolved. Thirty-four cases were submitted, with the Court delivering a verdict only on 15 cases.
Up to May 2022, 10 cases were submitted – the Court had already delivered a sentence on 12 cases.
In summation, from 2018 to May 2022, 163 cases were submitted to Court. Criminal Court had resolved 87 cases in the same period.
Criminal Court revealed that 112 cases were still pending within the system.
To incentivize Judges to expedite the trials, Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had passed to give an allowance. The motion was green lit by the Parliament as well.
