Opposition calls for regime change

Opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) have labeled the current administration as “deviant” and called on public to rise up to change this administration.
Speaking in a press conference held outside Parliament grounds on Monday, PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Adam Shareef Umar said that senior figures of this administration were ‘deviants’, and that the Parliament had refused to note this issue as an issue of concern.
Adam Shareef also called out his fellow colleagues in Parliament for their failure to condemn such acts, adding that this was a serious issue linked with public safety and security.
The opposition on Monday had attempted to push an emergency motion calling for accountability in the face of rising homosexuality and other sexual perversions in the country. The motion was rejected.,
The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had used their super majority to censure such motions by the opposition. MDP had previously censured the motion calling for an official condemnation of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party Spokesperson defaming the Prophet.
Adam Shareef said an immediate legal change of government was necessary. He urged all, irrespective of societal rank, to take action.
PPM Vice President and Naifaru Constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam said that irreligious activities are being promoted by a group. He added that the actions of these individuals need to be stopped by citizen’s actions.
Shiyam said that Monday’s motion was kicked out of Parliament after MDP Parliamentary Group put up a three-line whip to defeat the motion.
He added that the Parliament was no longer representative of the public – this sentiment was echoed by Maavashu Constituency MP Mohamed Saeed.
Saeed said that defamation of the Prophet, Islam, Quran, and Islamic values were becoming a light hearted issue. He stressed that without proper accountability, this situation would continue to deteriorate.
PPM Parliamentary Group Leader Ahmed Saleem said that this administration gave zero thoughts before defaming the Prophet and Islam. He called on the government to revise their stance and investigate these matters as serious ones.
