The opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) says that they will be holding a massive rally on Thursday evening in defense of Prophet Mohamed.
The rally is to begin at 2030hrs on Thursday evening at the Carnival area in Male’.
Speaking in a press conference, PPM Advisor and former Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that Maldives was a 100 percent Islamic nation and as such, the condemnation of the defamation of the Prophet issued by the government was less than acceptable.
Dr Shaheem said defaming the Prophet was unacceptable and that it was upon us to peacefully oppose that. He also added that this rally was being held under the guidance of opposition leader former President Abdullah Yameen.
Dr Shaheem also said that while the rally is organized by the opposition, this was in no way a political rally. He urged all to take part in the rally.
Two senior figures at India’s ruling Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, had defamed the Prophet on tv and social media, respectively. On May 26, Sharma made comments on a televised debate, defaming the Prophet and the Quran.
Last Saturday, a youth-led rally was also held in Male’. Hundreds flocked to the street on motorcycles, with many displaying posters condemning the statements.
