Opposition calls on govt to assist Maldivians in Sri Lanka

The opposition Progressive Congress Coalition has called on the government to check on and assist Maldivians living in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has been gripped by regular anti-government protests and violence has spilled onto the streets. The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa offered his resignation Monday, though his brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksa still remains in office.
A statement released by the opposition expressed concern for the heightened situation in Sri Lanka, expressing their hope that Sri Lankans and the Sri Lankan government would adhere to democratic principles and come together as a nation to resolve the issues facing the country.
The statement called on the Government of Maldives to check on, provide assistance and essential supplies to Maldivians living in Sri Lanka, and provide assistance to Maldivians wishing to leave Sri Lanka.
The Coalition also called on all Maldivians to take note of the developing situation and to prioritize personal safety in their day to day lives.
