Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the closure of all universities on November 13 and 14, in light of the 2024 General Elections. The Election Commission has granted leave to both students and staff of state universities to ensure their participation in the parliamentary elections.
In addition to state universities, the Election Commission has urged private universities and non-governmental higher education institutions to follow the same guidelines. This move aims to allow university members the opportunity to vote and engage in the democratic process.
To further ensure smooth election proceedings, the Commissioner General of Excise announced that all liquor shops and wine stores across Sri Lanka will be closed on November 14 and 15. The department has also instructed officials to enforce laws against any illegal liquor sales during this period, including operations without proper licenses.
These measures are part of broader efforts to maintain public order and facilitate voter participation during the election period.
