CNBC has reported that Russian oligarchs close to Russia's President Vladimir Putin have begun traveling towards the Maldives and Montenegro in their super-yachts.
The outlet reported that the oligarchs have been traveling towards the Maldives and Montenegro to escape American sanctions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The United States has decided to seize the properties owned by Russian oligarchs close to Putin.
The CNBC reported that at least four super-yachts owned by Russian oligarchs had been moving towards the Maldives and Montegenro.
The Maldives does not have an extradition treaty with the United States. However, in 2014, following a request by the United States, a Russian parliamentarian's son had been arrested in the Maldives and handed over to the Americans. This lead to strained ties between the Maldives and Russia. Former Defence Minister Col Mohamed Nazim had been in charge of the operation.
The Maldives is a popular destination for Russian tourists.
