The leader of the Progressive National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group, MP Ahmed "Red-wave" Saleem (PPM-Eydhafushi) stated that the ruling MDP were so intimidated by the former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom because he was the strongest, patriotic leader in the country.
Speaking at the opposition-lead "Kotharukoshi" (i.e. "Pigeon-Cage") rally at the Carnival area in Male City, MP Saleem that the ruling coalition had organised a meeting to decide what was to be done with the former President on the end of his presidential tenure. He said that the meeting was chaired by the former Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Sanjay Sudhir. He said that he had received this information directly from the President's Office.
At that meeting, President Solih had proposed that the former President Yameen be imprisoned. The Home Minister, Imran Abdullah, had been the most enthusiastic about this proposal. Minister Imran had proposed that Yameen be imprisoned in such a way that he could never be set free.
MP Saleem described the former President Yameen as the greatest patriotic leader in the country who was working to defend Islam from secularist conspiracies. He said that secularism could only be allowed to take root in this country by killing Yameen.
