The Malé City Council’s Hulhumalé Member, Ibrahim Shujau has called on the Housing Development Corporation to “return to the law”. He made this statement following the HDC’s claim that the upcoming opposition coalition rally; planned to be held in the Hiyaa Towers area in Hulhumalé Phase 2; could not be held without their permission.
A statement released by the HDC read that the rally had been organised without having sought a permit from the HDC. No activity could be held in any part of Hulhumalé without the permission of the HDC, read the statement.
Despite the HDC’s opposition, the Malé City Council had allowed for the rally to go forward. The Malé City Council claim that they had jurisdiction over Hulhumalé, and that the permits for such activities would be issued from the Council.
Shujau had claimed that the HDC statement had been issued “from the office in the middle of the night”. He said that an official of the HDC had claimed that the signature of the HDC’s Managing Director had to be sought as they could not find anyone else to sign the document.
Shujau said that although Shuhail had spoken “stubbornly”, the HDC’s legal team had advised the MD that he had “not done the right thing”. Shujau called on the HDC to return to the confines of the law.
