Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he is a pious Muslim who believes in the Islamic Shari’ah.
During the “Ask Speaker” programme launched by the Citizen’s Majlis on Clubhouse, Speaker Nasheed stated that he “fully” believed in “Islamic Shari’ah”. He stated this in response to a question posed to him about the implementation of the death penalty in the Maldives.
In response, Speaker Nasheed had said that different legal systems called for different implementations of the death penalty. He said that the Islamic Shari’ah also prescribed pre-requisites for the implementation of a death penalty.
Avoiding giving a clear answer, Speaker Nasheed had said that he always fully believed in Islamic Shari’ah. He also stated that he was a Muslim who lead a “pious life”.
He said that, in his opinion, the claim that he was not a pious Muslim was not entirely correct.
However, during his short term as president, he had in a public address spoken out against Shari’ah-prescribed penalties such as the death penalty and the amputation of the hand of the thief.
