The number of political appointments to be made in a year to be highest in recent history, as per the State’s proposal for next year’s budget.
The Ministry of Finance’s proposed 2022 budget expected that 1,039 political appointments would be made; with a total of MVR 402 million to be spent in salaries and allowances.
This will be the largest number of political appointments that would be made in a year.
The government had, for the current year, had budgeted MVR 382 million for 967 appointments. The next year’s budget for political appointments will exceed the current year by MVR 20 million.
The highest number of political appointments would be made for President’s Office, and the second-highest number would be made for the Ministry of Health with 138 proposed appointments. In comparison, the Foreign Ministry has been proposed to have 109 appointments.
The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party had promised that the Solih administration would reduce the number of political appointments. However, every year of the Solih administration has seen an increasing number of appointments.
