Majlis Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed, has said that he would request the Ministry of Defence to share a copy of the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) agreement; signed between the Maldivian and Indian governments; with the Parliament Committee on National Security Services.
Nasheed said this in his opening remarks on returning to the Speaker’s chair after a four-month absence. He mentioned that MP Adam Shareef Umar (Maduvvaree) had requested for a copy of the UTF agreement be submitted to the Parliament Committee on National Security Services for a thorough analysis.
Nasheed said that the Committee was working on it, and that the Majlis’ Secretary General would request the Ministry of Defence to share a copy of the agreement today. He said that MP Shareef would see the contents of the agreement.
Nasheed said that the agreement was not classified and that it contained no state secrets.
Despite Nasheed’s claims, the government has resisted all attempts to disclose any part of the agreement. Following a request for information submitted by Dhiyares, the Ministry of Defence had claimed that disclosing any part of the agreement posed a threat to national security.
