Former President Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, has returned to the Maldives after an absence of 4 months.
The former president was greeted at Velana International Airport by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Nasheed will be staying in the Maldives for 3 days.
After meeting the President, they both got into a car which took them to the airport’s VIP lounge; there he was greeted by ministers and elected parliamentarians.
Nasheed will be staying at Hotel Jen a five-star hotel in capital Male'.
Security has been heightened in the area surrounding the hotel. Many MNDF servicepeople and Police officers are active in the area; metal detectors are also being used.
Nasheed said that he had stayed abroad for so long on the urging of his family. He said that he had extended the vacation days he got from the Majlis, and excused himself from traveling to the Maldives for security reasons.
This is the first time that he has visited the Maldives after he left, following a May 6th explosion that has been described as an assassination attempt.
The people accused of orchestrating the explosion have been arrested, and are currently being tried in court.
