The Chinese Embassy in the Maldives has responded to a tweet posted by former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
The Chinese Embassy replied to a comment made in President Nasheed’s tweet on Independence Day. He claimed he was pleased to see a British Carrier Strike Group by the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
President Nasheed’s tweet insinuated that the British fleet was asserting their right to pass by the Spratly Islands.
The embassy tagged President Nasheed in their tweet which read that China respects the freedom of navigation and overflight in Chinese territory enjoyed by other countries in accordance with international law.
However, the Chinese Embassy condemned flexing strength targeting China in ways that sabotage regional peace and stability, as it undermines the sovereignty and security of China.
The Chinese Ambassador and the Embassy have replied to previous statements by President Nasheed. The former president has been known to make falsities regarding China and has claimed that the previous government sold 16 islands to China.
