A journalist working for an Indian media outlet has been terminated for criticizing the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
According to Shyam Meera Singh, who was employed at Aaj Tak run the India Today Group, he has been terminated for speaking against PM Modi.
Singh shared his termination letter on social media. The letter read he is being terminated for violating the company's Social Media and Code of Conduct policies. Screenshots of two tweets were also attached in the email; one in English, the other in Hindi.
The English tweet read that instead of telling others to respect the Prime Minister, Modi must first be told to respect the post of Prime Minister.
Since PM Modi assumed office, journalists critical of the PM have been facing numerous difficulties. While some have been arrested and jailed, it was recently revealed that the government has been spying on the country's journalists.
