An Indian athlete in the Maldivian jersey this week participated in the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in India.
An Indian athlete participated in the 4×100m relay with the Maldivian team.
President of Athletics Association of Maldives Mohamed Tholal informed online media Mihaaru that an Indian athlete was added to the team as a member of the Maldivian relay team tested positive for COVID-19, and he wanted to enable the rest of the members to participate.
"It was done to offer the other athletes an opportunity to compete", said Tholal, as the decision was made so that the rest of the team would not miss the chance to compete, despite one of them testing positive.
Although the team's efforts were worthy of a national record, it was not considered due to the non-Maldivian team member.
A Maldivian men's relay team also took part in the championship. In addition to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Kazakhstan joined the competition. Previously, Maldives has taken part in the competition in 2014 and 2019.
